Classic Igloo Moment: Sidney Crosby’s First NHL Goal

July 2005 — Lottery takes place to determine who would receive the number 1 overall pick.  Due to a labor stoppage all 32 NHL teams were included.  There was a clear cut number 1 pick which led this lottery to be dubbed “The Sidney Crosby Sweepstakes” among other nicknames.  It came down to two teams, the Anaheim (then) Mighty Ducks and the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Penguins won the rights to draft Sidney Crosby.

October 8th 2005 — The 2nd game of the season saw the Penguins come back to the Mellon Arena for the first time in about a year and a half.  Near the end of the 2nd period with the Penguins on the Power Play Sidney Crosby cashed in and scored his first goal in the NHL:

Trying A New Theme

I decided to try a new theme so I could easily customize some of the text colors without paying to customize such trivial themes.  I’m going to have to redo my head, but that’s fine.  Hope you all enjoy the new look.

Be on the look out for the launch of LoonBin Designs.  Until then visit Igloo Tees.

She’s Out Of My League (New Movie)

If you have seen the previews for the new movie “She’s Out of My League” you’ll notice something interesting during these previews.  PITTSBURGH!  This movie is set and filmed in the Pittsburgh area with Pittsburgh themes incorporated.  The reason why I am posting this isn’t just that about Pittsburgh, but about the Penguins and the Mellon Arena.  Some shots of the movie were filmed during a 2008 home game.  It looks like an extremely funny movie.

Classic Igloo Moment: Malkin Scores Shoot Out Winner Against B’Hawks

It was a snowy day in Pittsburgh on February 14th 2007 when the Blackhawks came to town to face off against the Pittsburgh Penguins.  After watching a 3-1 lead turn into a 4-3 defecit late in the third the Penguins rallied to tie the game off of Evgeni Malkin’s stick @ 14;21 of the final period.  Tied after the 5 minutes of overtime play the game enter the shootout.  Erik Christiansen scored in the shootout for the Penguins.  Havlat, Smolinski, and Sidney Crosby would all be stopped before Evgeni Malkin scored the game winner.  Amid the shouts of “Geno! Pens trade for Ponikarvosky and Leopold.

Alexei Ponikarovsky (NHL.com)

Jordan Leopold (NHL.com)

The past couple of days have been busy for the Pittsburgh Penguins.  They’ve traded a 2nd round pick to Florida for Jordan Leopold.  The 6′ defenseman could become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.  However, with Sergei Gonchar’s contract talks on hold until the season ends there could be a bit of shuffling amognst the defensive corps.  Leopold is 29 and should cost less then the vetern Gonchar who is sure to see some lucrative contracts come his way.

Malkin will be getting a new line mate on his left wing.  Toronto sent Alexi Ponikarovsky to Pittsburgh for Luca Caputi and Martin Skoula.  This trade seems to signal that the Penguins feel they can win the Stanley Cup this year.  Poni can bring a big body to Malkin’s line standing at 6’4″ and weighing 229 pounds.

Team Canada Wins Gold

Congrats should go out to Team Canada for winning the gold medal in Men’s Olympic Hockey.  The final score 3-2 in overtime, Penguins center Sidney Crosby scores the winning goal.  While we all hoped for Team USA, at least us Pens fans can feel good tonight knowing Sid the Kid scored the winning goal to earn the gold medal.  It’s unbelieveale to think about what he’s accomplished in his young career.  Adding the gold medal was almost inevitable.
